DRII sinking or swimming in Asia?
Note: The full version of this editorial originally appeared on ZDNet's "BCP Confidential" blog.

The Disaster Recovery Institute International (DRII) has appointed a new representative in Singapore, operating under the name "DRI Singapore."  The representative, CCS Enterprise (S) Private Limited, also operates Strohl Systems Singapore for the American BCP software company Strohl Systems.
Note: Strohl Systems advertises on our web site.

New DRII representatives in Asia face an uphill climb, for these reasons:
  • They must try to rehabilitate DRII's tarnished reputation in Asia with limited marketing budgets, and without the benefit of DRI Asia's mailing list, which is now being used to promote a competing, Asian BCP certification program from the BCM Institute.
  • They each have small target markets. Asia (including India, China and Japan) has 3.7 billion people. Singapore, however, has roughly the population of Alabama (population 4.5 million). Malaysia has the population of Texas (population 23 million), but no effective requirements for companies to prepare and test business continuity plans, and therefore little demand for trained BCP professionals.  And the big challenge in China (population 1.3 billion) is crippling theft of intellectual capital like DRII's training materials, which get photocopied and ripped-off literally overnight.

  • They have competition. The Business Continuity Institute (BCI), DRII's U.K.-based competitor in professional certification, for example, has just launched an "Accredited Training" program in Asia that will compete directly with DRII's training for students - and instructors.  And the BCM Institute is very aggressive in India and China.

  • DRII isn't paying attention to Southeast Asia (population 600 million). According to an officer, DRII has been "totally overwhelmed with Latin America (population 550 million), China and Japan (population 127 million)- not to mention Canada (population 33 million)."  I know two (2) highly-qualified, motivated people in Singapore who say they contacted DRII months ago (one at my suggestion) to express interest in representing DRII in Asia.  Neither of them received any reply. DRII really must be overwhelmed.

BCI training partnership
Five (5) of Asia's top trainers are working with Singapore's BCP Asia to offer the Business Continuity Insitute's Accredited Training in Asia, starting in January, 2008.  Henry Ee, Wong Tew Kiat, Kenny Seow, Nathaniel Forbes and Andrew Lee have a combined seventy (70) years of experience in BCP in Asia.  All are CBCP's or MBCI's; one is an FBCI. They have all worked for companies in Asia with the most sophisticated crisis, emergency and business continuity plans. And they all like to teach...  Read the course brochure. Register for the January course in Singapore; other cities in Asia will be announced in 2008.

BCM Benchmarking Study
The  2008 Continuity Insights and KPMG Business Continuity Management Program Benchmarking Study produces an annual, state-of-the-world report on business continuity planning, crisis management, and  information technology disaster recovery (IT DR) based on responses from professionals and practitioners like you.  To participate in the survey click this link.  You can receive a free copy of the results if you complete the survey. Individual responses and identities will not be revealed.

Note: Continuity Insights is an advertiser on our web site. Even if they weren't, we'd highly recommend the Continuity Insights annual conference in New Orleans, USA.

Annual BCP Salary Survey
Our partner, U.S. recruiter BC Management's annual, global compensation survey of the BCP profession will be released in January, 2008. Have a look at their 2006 compensation report for Asia and the 2006 compensation report for India. They also have reports for Europe & the U.K., Canada and the USA.  Still the single best comprehensive source of intelligence about what your colleagues and competitors get paid in our profession. To get the survey when it's released, put in your name and email under "Find A Job" at Staff On Standby.

BCP Jobs: Writer, English Language
Forbes Calamity Prevention needs a top-flight writer of English. We're hoping to develop relationships with a contractor with whom to have a long-term arrangement. Not full-time, but regular part-time. What we need written:  business continuity plans, studies and reports for clients, project proposal narratives, exercise summaries and recommendations. If you can also contribute items to our newsletter and blogs, swell! Some demonstrated interest in business continuity, crisis management or emergency response would be a selling point.

How well you write English is the key criterion; our director, Nathaniel Forbes, is American, is a writer, has been a journalist and was an English major at university. He's the judge. Where you are located is not important; we're accustomed to working online across time zones, so you can work at home in Oklahoma or on the beach in Bali. For this job, dressing for success may mean shorts and flip-flops. Assignment: send something captivating to Nathaniel Forbes. Need inspiration? Read some of Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. Ineffably lyrical prose.
